Hot air can be created from thin air, but not destroyed .. Archived Message

John. (1) Relevant or otherwise, conservation of momentum does not require both bodies to be in motion. Please think of Newton's cradle as an example. Its kid's stuff. (2) Gravitation fields, electrical fields and permanent magnetic fields are all sources of potential energy. A magnetic dipole moment in a magnetic field will possess potential energy, it will want to move. (3) Energy is neither created nor destroyed. So any potential energy field is created, or maintaned by an input of energy. (4) In the case of a permanent magnet, for example, its magnetic field can do work on a permanent or induced magnetic dipole that enters the field, so a permanent magnet will attract/repel another one, or pick up staples, or move iron filings, and in doing so, will lose a tiny bit of its field strength until it is a magnet no more. Energy expended. Buy a new magnet. (5) To refer to the above as perpetual motion, or as the creation of energy from nothing, is hyperbole - it is the creation of hot air from thin air. Now, whether anyone has successfully converted the above to a rotary motor that spins until the permanent magnets' fields run down, I don't know, and I don't profess to know. But unless I've missed something, I do yet see a reason why it would defy the basic laws of physics, or why it would be an illegitimate subject for debate. ESPECIALLY if you have some scientific literacy, then I think you have a certain 'oblige' to discuss what you know or feel to be true in an educational way which enriches all: Education can be neither created nor destroyed, it is only transferred from one person to another. Kind regards, Shyaku.
