dereklane: Trickle down isn't a thing, but economic interconnectedness is (for better or worse) - it could be said that the one thing that is certain to trickle down is the shit from the economic bad times (even when there aren't any). I'm not really worried about our standing business-wise - that rising is often inversely proportional to how well people like me do anyway. I'm more worried about the britannia unchained types being allowed to let rip on the few social services and protections we still have and push us further rightwards; not to mention the putative 'far-right internationale' being bolstered and consolidating their hold here (i don't have to like the 'liberal' end of the neoliberal elites to be afraid of those fascist-sounding types getting more power). My current objection to no deal brexit is a short term one of what can be done to us in the period between a no deal brexit happening and getting rid of any gloating shock doctrine-wielding hard right tory government that would probably follow. Of course, if a socialist-ish government then came in it might well be fine and dandy, and have great stuff like more freedom to nationalise or whatever, but that doesn't seem very likely before a lot of damage could be done to the likes of us (and i'd assume the trade deals set up in this period would be trying to stop any of that stuff before it starts). I've never had an inherent political objection to brexit - i've been a lexiter for most of my life (still am in theory) - i just can't see the way a no deal brexit at this point will do anything but make life worse for people like me. But this is just my current vague position - i really don't know, i don't understand, it's bloody complicated to navigate all the things going on and i can surely be wrong about everything (either way we're on the same side).
