It exports mainly gas, less oil, and has no reliance on highly destructive, massively polluting, and failing tar sands and fracking, unlike the north Americans. But it's not reliant on these exports at all because its local economy provides for by far the biggest slice of GDP, it has zero debt and massive capital reserves. So why export at all? Well if it did not, the Europeans might just get uppity again and make a big war again, because they're reliant on this gas. So there's implicit blackmail (or, a symbiotic economy to use gentler terms). According to the consistently reliable Dmitry Orlov freedom of expression in everyday life is far, far greater, in Russia than in the West. I've never been to Russia but can attest that here in London it's claustrophic and miserable if you have any kind of dissident world outlook. Moreover it's no secret the supposed Russian opposition of which the young contrarian speaks is fed by a rash of western 'NGO's, and the likes of Navalny are paid by them. Moreover the real opposition is the Communists and right nationalists, not the despised and owned liberals of whom the boy speaks. Democracy? So called democracy is jealous and hell of Putin because he's so, consistently, popular. You could add that Russia is obsessed with international law and supporting those that stand up to western hegemony, but maybe that's would add insult to injury.
