I am coming at this from a small experience of having worked in TV.
I temper that approach with a keen interest in how content is presented on youtube etc

It strikes me that it's not quite as expensive as is percieved.
Yes: it would take money. But I wonder just how much initially.
It's convincing another party to endorse and assist in the production that will be challenging.

But what will sell, rather than just another fishing show, is an experience.
That is where a charismatic front person is crucial, where a format that is well thought out and delivered is needed, and a diligent pursuit of the values of the show are followed.(make money to make it feasible)

Phill: I hear your point about the apprentice show. To be honest I only watched a few episodes. Not because I didnt like it, But as I tend not to concentrate on TV too much. What I did see was what I expected: Equal parts enjoyment (Learning) and also the less enjoayble parts (You reference sexism for example)

You pose a question that needs to be answered and tied into the last point above before these sorts of discussions ever become reality:

What is the audience of the show and why should they bother to watch it?

"it would be interesting to know how many general public bother to watch these programs"

Another way of asking this is: To whom will the show primarily appeal to and how wide an audience from that core demographic will I cater to?

More importantly: how do I make it worth their while to watch?

-If you are specialist in the approach you drastically reduce an already small niche market, But appeal to the dedicated fisher.

-If you are too broad you may alienate the more experienced viewer and dilute the essence of the show being fishing based and have it change to a reality based format.

Then once decided: The primary source of revenue comes into play.

And then the question of how to align your target audience and the Money source.

But this rests firmly rooted on the above decision tree.

ThomasW's point of watching local content reflects strongly of him having a connection to the show (local content) thats very important.

Chad: I think with a reasonably fast laptop and an inexpensive HD camera: A good enough concept can be put together. It may lack the polish of a professional production house, But if the idea is strong enough, The content strong enough and the deliverance coherent enough, you never know.

Aspects such as the weather are potential obstacles: But also potential opportunities.
Sure idyllic conditions are good to watch.Thats why Aussie soaps are popular in the UK: But extreme conditions can be a showcase for different products and subsequent sponsorship. Bear Grylls isnt just a survival guy: He is an entertaining survival guy and he makes his shows in all sorts of weather (I know his budget is on a different scale: Just trying to illustrate potential)

    Must sleep.
