Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 X20XEV 1998 - Cam sensor failure - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 X20XEV
( Optional ) ECU Type: Simtec 56
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Launch x 431
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0340

Hi

Thought this was going to be a quick one! checked resistances across sensor found one side open circuit. Fitted replacement FuelParts sensor fault still present even though scoping sensor showed sensor functioning referring to Autodata specimen waveforms. Carried out continuity between ECU and sensor, no shorts or opens. As cam belt a little tired I replaced belt, tensioner and guides and checked that TDC mark in crank pulley was accurate. Stumped now.

I would fit a genuine sensor and loom as I do not trust any aftermarket sensor after a few bad experiences with them.

Hi Andrew,

Where have you been hiding, not seen your name for some years now?

WRT your Vectra, Personally I would fit the original siemens part if you can still get hold of them, As I had many problems with cars that had the OE mod carried out on them. The reason for this was purely a change of manufacture of the part and it had a different plug on it. Fit a new genuine crank sensor too and be absolutely certain the timing and tension of the belt are correct.

Thanks guys, will try OE sensor today. Can't really see it being anything else at this point.

I have just had this fault on a 03 vectra, maybe the same but worth scoping the output from the crank sensor aswell, The ECU was at fault in my case.

Fitted genuine Siemens sensor from Vauxhall all ok now. As if I didn't know better than to fit pattern sensors!!
Just to put the tin hat on it the genuine sensor was cheaper than the Fuel Parts (useless) copy.
Wonder if I can get any compensation for the hours wasted?

good luck on thta one i tried to get compensation when i had a duff cat from them they were not in the least interested. I will not touch anything from them again.

I will second that Kelly! It took me 6 months just to get a credit/warranty claim for a duff Cat. They refuse to believe that that their products are c**p.

If "WE" as an industry stopped buying their cr*p then they would have to pay attention.

If we don't buy it the factors won't stock it.

Well said Mark, thats the problem in a nutshell, there are ALWAYS people who will buy this crap over good quality parts.
After an experiance like the one above you would think that would put them off but no, the next time they need something they will price the crap brand again.

had this with a 2.2 omega after a garage fitted a aftermarket cam sensor, so I fitted a new vauxhall sensor plus the ecu it kn----ed car worked fine. ray

Nope, policy decision now, only going to fit either OE sensors, or from manufacturers like Bosch, Febi and NTK.
Are there any other brands safe to use?

Just because it comes in a "genuine" looking box and has Bosch on it does not mean it,s genuine Bosch, or Febi or NTK etc.

So what else can we do then other than buy Genuine everytime.

This wouldn't do our business much good but then checking your diagnostic methods again due to a duff sensor doesn't either.

Difficult situation all round i believe. If it seems to be well known within the trade how come trading standards haven't looked into it.

If you phone the dealer first you know the price for a good one,then when you phone a factor you quite often find their retail is above the dealer price !!

It is the bigger factor,s that seem to have problems with so called "genuine" parts.

It would improve your "first fix" rate by a mile and stop you wasting time that you can't charge for.

Add up all the time we all waste carrying out further diagnostic checks based on the fact that the part we have just fitted can't be faulty.

I do agree with what your saying but if you buy a bosch sensor in a bosch box then you expect it to be genuine but now even this isn't certain.

Andrew Pages, ECP & GSF are all what i'd call large motor factors, are these not to be trusted then.

our local smallish motor factor (4 or 5 branches)don't seem to sell any other make sensor other than Intermotor so then we don't have much choice of either dealer or ECP/Andrew Page.

Hi Lee,

I hear what you are saying, all I can add to it is that clone/fake parts are a big problem for all the leading suppliers.

With regard to your local supplier only stocking a certain brand I also agree with you, I would like to fit more Bosch product than I do (if only I could get hold of it)

But I don't think anything is going to change until we vote with our monthly accounts.

Ive also had an Omega 2.2 a few years ago that we fitted a cam sensor to which we bought from a Vauxhall specialist. that one caused us problems. ( with old sensor fitted, it logged cam sensor fault, with new sensor fitted it logged lots of sensor faults )

We found that the sensor was non genuine, So we then replaced it with a genuine sensor which cured the problem.

Last week, we got a phone call from a local garage and they had exactly the same problem after buying a sensor from the local motorspares shop. ( so either the sensors are faulty or incorrect application for the 2.2 omega ) as they are different to the 1.8 and 2.0 litre but look similar.

We Sell and fit lots of sensors and use both genuine and non genuine, but you just have to be selective and if problems occur, stop using that particular sensor.

One Particular sensor we used to use lots of is the Corsa C X10/12 XE We Use Facet sensors and have paid as little as £9.00 + vat for them in bulk and must have bought a few 100 over the past few years. I can remember having 1 possible faulty sensor in all that time returned from a regular customer, so it was never Tested or refitted, For the sake of £9.00 it went straight in the bin. ( faulty or not ). Even Genuine Parts fail on occasions and make you waste time checking it out as you know that the part is new and genuine so cannot possibly be faulty.

I would try to steer clear of intermotor but on occasions, if it was all that was available, I would use it if it got the car up and running again. ( When the dealers are 5 times as expensive and on back order etc ) If I was wary about the component, I would inform the Customer what part I had fitted and Why.

I'd never known a make called Facet until recently when ECP asked what quality sensor i'd like (Clio 1.5 DCI cam sensor) so obviously i said an OE spec type so they sent a Facet upto me.

Fitted it and fault code erased and scoped up perfect.

What are good makes, i'd say these are fairly good/reliable

This was very common issue when both models were current cars.

X18XE and X20XEV used simtec 56.5 and the cam sensor is inductive using phase shift principle to ID cam position.

The 2.2 engine used in Omega B was fitted with either Simtec 70 or 71. The engines look the same and the cam sensors look the same. But they are quite different in operation. Smitec 70 / 71 are Hall effect / digital output.

When they fit the wrong type it causes a short circuit on the 5 volt reference line. that why you get lots of other errors logged i.e throttle position and pedal sensor etc. I have seen this to damage some ECU's.
