The central point is, I'd argue, that Brexit was conceived, like the referendum itself, as a piece of political theatre on a very big scale. Cameron saw it as a way to strengthen his leadership and hand in relation to the Tory rightwing and at the same time make him look 'strong' and a real leader.
Only things didn't work out quite as expected. Now, the very group that Cameron wanted to crush for ever have taken over the party and it's Cameron's wing that have been toppled from power.
Brexit is about nationalist feelings, hopes, and dreams, tarted-up with rhetoric from the left and right. Looked at dispationately and rationally there are no real solid arguments for thinking that leaving the EU will benefit ordinary people living in the UK at all, on the contrary. There are going to be lots of immediate negatives compared to a great mess of hopes for a better future wrapped in a parcel of huge... ifs.
