There you go again. It helps to regulate the market and prevents excessive swings on prices; uncertainty for consumers and farmers alike."
That is, it fixes prices that benefit market trading (places like London, nothing to do with farmers themselves). If too Many farmers produce too many swedes, the price of swedes plummet (potentially good for consumers, if the supermarkets reflected supply and deman prices, which they don't). If exactly The right amount of swedes are grown to match the market, the farmers find budgeting easier (but not easy; it's still entirely dependent on supermarkets deciding they don't need these this week, and #### the farmer. So the farmer sells them to other farmers to feed their animals, at a way reduced rate). This happens NOW. There is little protection for farmers inthe market, in fact (beef dropped quite a bit a little while back because the grazing was so good, everyone was finishing their animals at the same time. Sfp does not protect farmers, and never did. It's cash in the kitty to do something with if they leave the land they have be, so the bankers and traders can predict with more certainty, and therefore make money.
Tell me otherwise, and why I am wrong. Telling me just that I have it arse about face without meaningful explanation just looks like patronising put downs (like Some others here have been doing lately). Talking this stuff through sensibly helps all of us (even the geniuses) build their understanding about what is true and what is political mumbo jumbo.
