I don't see a contradiction. In the case of Begum, she was legally a child when she left, probably with the active collusion, certainly with the knowledge of her own government's security agencies. And her motives were probably a creation of that same government's propaganda campaign against the Syrian government. Take away those three factors and there is no Shamima Begum, ISIS bride and so they are all mitigating factors from an ethical point of view. For that same government that was contravening international law in a hundred ways to create and fuel the rise of the very terrorist armies in Syria which Begum was recruited for to turn around and throw the book at her - a child soldier; their own recruit - in contravention of international law, is a disgrace ethically and legally. Does she deserve some punishment from an legal/ethical perspective? I don't know, but if it's administered in the UK, it will reinforce the principle that there is one law for the elite and one for the plebs, a cost that far outweighs any benefit to either the public, Begum, or justice. In my opinion anyway.
I don't think this relates to whether the words of a sixteen year old climate activist are worth paying attention to or not. Those words should be judged on their own merits.
