kontiki mod to stop it floating away??

I've heard someone has come up with some idea to stop electric kontikis floating away after the main line is bitten thru. Anyone know about this?

You will find a full video on the website of Paul's Fishing Kites. However, be prepared to shell out big money, it currently sells for about $800.00 and is a little complicated to load.

I do believe this is a Surf Casting forum. Not a Kontiki Forum. Not being unfriendly Trev. TT the sponsor of this forum, do not sell motorised torpedo's. They sell real fishing gear. And whilst I really have no interest in those 25 hook super cruiser liners. I did observe some rather exciting moments in the usage of them.

Its really makes my day when I see one drifting past, untethered to the winch. And to watch the owners rushing up the beach, praying it will come ashore. And yep when there is over two grand doing a coastal tour, it brings a smile to me. And a prayer to them.

Well the other day I was down at the beach. And drove past a Flontiki setter, just him and his wife, well, I aint sure of their sleeping arrangements, but they sure looked like a couple. Why they had two Flontikis out, one each. Now that must be married bliss. His and hers. Frig thats 50 bloody hooks. Between the two of them.

I had two rods out, Got four snapper. They got nothing. That made my day.

Next day I went to Fairdown Beach, a bit north of Westport. To check out the holes at low tide. Damm I got a bonus. Another wife standing by the 4x4 looking forlornly down the beach.

A Flontiki bait board looking very idle on the beach. Nest to the 4 x 4. Out with the binoculars, and low and behold. About a mile down the beach is the rest of the familly. Well two blokes. Hand lining in a Flotiki. Dumping their main line and traces on the beach. Get their Flontiki in. And just leave the massive mess of 160 mono on the beach. Must have had a malfunction with their Flontiki winch. Or a snag and had to use the 4 x 4 towball to do the trick.

Its moments like those I need Minties. To stop me smiling.

Would I ever get one. Not in a hundred years. I prefer to do the hard yards for my fish. And when I get a few I feel a sense of achievment.

Sorry Trev, not a personal attack on you. After all us Trevs shouldnt pick on each other.

But Flontiki's just rile me up. They even set in my very few holes, I have at present. Now that really gets up my gander. Damm four miles of beach and they have to set where I fish. But they go a click or two out and I am down to a 100 metres, and thats a good cast .

No offence meant and none given. This Flontiki thing has been thrashed to death on here. Those that have them, and some surfcasters do have them.

Praise them. Fish for tea and the freezer etc. Well you can buy a lot of fresh fish for the outlay for a Flontiki.

And why do I call them Flontiki's. Well they are flogging the fish. The Trawllers do their best, then the Flontiki's add there bit.

Oh well enuff said.

Speaking only for myself, I am getting sick to death of this continual whining of what is another arm of our sport. I am constantly reading about huge catches of snapper on torpedoes, yet in my fishing career I have yet to see this happen, but I did see an elderly gentleman land one snapper off Marine Parade two weeks ago, his other twenty-four hooks, apart from two tiny sharks, were empty.

I am constantly reading messages about 'Snapper Thieves' (utter crap) but I read no condemnation of boat owners who are bringing home limit catches on very frequent occasions. Try watching the Saturday fishing shows for verification. Why is there this quite ridiculous moaning about the use of alternative methods: kites, bags, kontikis and torpedoes? They are being operated by guys, girls and their families to have a day on the beach having fun.

I run some of the best surfcasting gear available, I also run a motorised torpedo. The cost of the torpedo outfit was $4000.00 and I am fully aware of the amount of fish I could purchase with that money, just eighty kilos at today's snapper price of $40.00 a kilo. However, I don't measure my success in fish, I measure my day by enjoyment, which at seventy years of age I think I am entitled. Using your measure of value for money, there wouldn't be a single fishing boat in Napier harbour, they cost a damn site more to purchase and run that a torpedo.

Sorry, Hardy, you really need to chill out and learn to respect what others do for their enjoyment. It's messages such as yours that turn people away from this site believing it to be elitist, personally, and I don't blame them.

Footnote: For goodness sake don't look at the numbers of snapper those guys who fish from kayaks are taking, you'll be on blood pressure tablets ... just like me!

Sorry Hangler its you who need to chill out and take things tongue in cheek as Hardy tends to do on a regular bases and if you actually read his post fully and not just focus on the negative aspects that were said in jest. We all have our own opinions, likes and dislikes and everytime someone posts his opinion you post a personal attack on them then cry wolf (like you probably will with this post) when people fire up because of your post.
We don't harass the boaties because how they catch fish is still sporting same as kayak generally using lightish line to bring the fish in, using gained knowledge the same as surfcasters to find the fish, not just parking up and sending a tow rope out and generally bringing in dead fish that can't be released. If we are lucky enough to catch a large snapper which aren't great eating then we have the option to release and alot of us do. A few of us on this board from Hawkes Bay witnessed a longliner at mohaka bring in about 30+kg of snapper on one set, putting them in basic fish bins with no ice in 30 degree heat. He then sent his kontiki out again. Most of us have no problem with guys going out and getting a feed of fish by what ever means, its great to see families out doing it.
What also bugs us is the time of year that they go out in force, when the big snapper are in to feed before breeding.

Here's a question for you.... Do you get as much enjoyment out of pulling a fish in on a 300lb line as you do playing a fish in on a surf rod on 15lb line??

So you have seen one angler using a torpedo who experienced a truly exceptional catch, get over it. This is an extremely rare happening, I fished the Bay of Plenty beaches, where snapper are reasonably common, never have I seen reported a catch of that size. I had many long line anglers contact me, including regular reports from the New Zealand Kite Fishers club, as I wrote a monthly feature, 'The Kite and Kontiki Report' for a Bay of Plenty/Waikato fishing magazine.

You are welcome to accompany me on the beach and I assure you I regularly put unwanted fish back, and it's a rare occurrence they do not swim away. On many occasions I have seen surfcasters heave fish over the breakers in a manner that would do Valarie Adams great credit. I don't reckon much on their chances of survival.

As for keeping fish: have you never seen the piles of fish thrown on the beach by the anglers spinning at Awatoto, or did you read the complaints about a trailer load of kahawhai on the beach at Napier? Have you not seen the bodies of rays left on the beach at Clifton, or the fish cleanings and the bait packets left on the beach. Did you not see the recent thread with the bottles and line left on the beach by surfcasters, it was only a month ago? If one angler decides he wishes to leave his catch in the sun, so what, it's his fish to do with as he pleases and the business of nobody else. Why shouldn't he or she continue to fish, the limit is nine fish exactly the same as for you. If you are implying you catch one large fish and immediately pack up and go home, then you have my admiration, you are certainly a 'one off'. By far the majority of anglers continue to fish on, exactly as would I.

The fishery's minister allows a certain percentage of fish for the recreational catch, to the best of my knowledge he doesn't legislate by what method they should be caught. You like surfcasting, great, so do I. However, I also enjoy using other methods with no preference other than enjoyment. I abide by my limits in quantity and size, how I catch them is entirely up to me. I spear flounder, I net piper and mullet, are these methods also wrong?

If Mr Hardy's message is tongue in cheek then it doesn't start of well by giving wrongful information about the sponsors of this site, where long line tackle will make up a percentage of their business.

The size line is of no consequence, I use a winch to retrieve the line as at my age I am not strong enough to retrieve the gear by hand. But hang on a minute, I seem to recall a fishing show two weeks ago where the anglers (rod and line) were using ... yes you guessed it ... an electric reel winch on their rods to wind in the fish. What on earth is the difference? The basic idea for this wonderful hobby is enjoyment, nothing more and nothing less, other than those who wish to use their skills and chase the big money now on offer in tournaments. My preference is for a couple of hours sitting on the beach, and a couple of fish to take home for my dinner.

Well I gotta go now as the Night Nurse caught me using my Laptop after 9pm. She reckons I was more than likely on those naughty sites. I told her I was on TT. Well buggar me, she thought it was some brand of party pills. So they did a search of my room. And double bugga, they found my Bourbon and coke stash. So thats gone. And now I have to have an attendant with me ( Well they are sort of a nurse I guess) when I use my laptop.

And they are going to put me on some new medication as they reckon I am " Kontikiphobic "

Did you actually read my post?? Just a question because you definately failed to answer my question at the bottom and instead just included another rant about something totally different to what was asked..
Just want to know, where in my post did I put anything derogatory about contikis?? Or have a whine about the rubbish left at the beach?? I actually picked up half a bag full today and didn't notice any "surfcasters pilchards" or "contiki salted bonito". How do you know who they were from??
If I was fishing for a feed then after that first set I would've gone home actually and so would've most people.
Never saw the "complaints about the trailer load of kahawai", only saw a discussion with ideas of how to run comps better. You must have also missed the "FACT" that every single kahawai was taken away by anglers at the comp.
I know for a fact that contiki fisherman in the bay of plenty regularly have great catches and those who don't need to speak to a surfcaster to get some ideas on how to inprove their catch!! I increased my father in laws catch by getting him to fish at a different time and shorter set and now he regularly gets 9 snapper off one set. He goes out once or twice a week to feed his family and friends. I've even caught close to 30kg of snapper in an evening and I started to release fish once I had a feed.

As to your offer for me to come fish with you.....Last time I asked to come fish at your amazing gurnard hole that you always pulled a few out of surfcasting I got no reply back.

Most of what you've written has nothing to do with what I actually wrote. You seriosly need to read a post in full before flying off the handle and starting a personal attack on someone.

Mr Hardy, with reference your post timed at 1:52 yesterday. Loved it, now that is what I call tongue in cheek and it [the post] was taken in good part with a good laugh.

I am not a Kahawhai catching champion, although I admit to catching my share. I have held a UK record and hold several medals for meritorious catches, but alas no world records. I bow to your superior prowess and envy the glory you are entitled to bathe in.

When fishing LeQuense Road this morning, I could see three torpedoes in action, although I don't know of any catches. All the anglers were happy in their work with no upsets or people crossing lines. The surfcasters, myself among them, were too busy catching fish to worry about the catches or methods of others.

Hangler, and others in his company, were happy in their little slice of heaven, I am sure you will understand being as one with nature, and to hell with others.

Sorry, I missed one of your questions. You asked where I purchased my torpedo set up. I shopped at FCO in Hastings, I like to support local tackle retailers, especially as in return they offer sponsorship to local clubs. I believe Pania have benefited quite recently but on that I may be wrong. The torpedo I purchased was a GT unit and those are not held by TT, they handle two other brands. However, don't fear, all is not lost. I purchase much of my terminal tackle and line from TT and in the past I have purchased fly-tying equipment.

Whilst I may not be a huge customer, I have done my bit and will continue to do so.

Someone asked about my gurnard hole? This is situated on the local map and marked as spot 'X'. Should I share this information with you in precise fashion, I fear I would need to kill you. My family hold gurnard as the number one table fish and I regret the location is sacrosanct. I am a little concerned at your question because at present we have landed gurnard in all the local spots we have fished, including this morning. I have also mentioned we are using a bait very popular thirty years ago but now fallen from favour. Well would you believe the gurnard this morning fell victim ... he should have kept his mouth shut as I am about spot 'X'.

When i was a kid fishing in the 1960's this was the top bait. It came in a yellow tin full of fish oil. Messy but effective. Thought you would have been old enough to remember it.

Gidday Hangler and all you other peepers.

As a lot know here, I have been here for well about four years, probably more. Some stuff I post is good stuff. And just occassionaly to perp the forum up a bit, well I chuck out an unbaited hook.

Damm I caught you Hangler, I was after a Snappa. But missed out on that. Not even a bite. The snappa are getting very cunning these days. They won't bite.

Actually that contraption is a well thought out idea. And yes I have seen the video. Were I ever to buy one of those things, the ontiki things(Thats the best I can Say) that would be a must

And yep I have a kite, a five hook model. From Sunset Kites, now alas they are gone. But I took the hook section off. And planed to use a release clip to fly my surf caster line out. Dratt, after much tacking practice. It failed. We bever get an off shore wind down here in the Antipodes.

Now on a windy day I just go fly the kite, makes me feeel like a kid again. And I am 66.

So occassionally I go fly my kite, and most times fishing.

And when nothing is happening. well I go fishing on here.

I'm known for it. That is why James, did say Tongue in Cheek. They all know me.

I have actually recovered two Kontiki's that went kinda astray from the given plan. In both cases I have read the ph number and rang, and returned the
Thingies to the owners.

That enables me to sleep at night. Well until the night nurse comes around and prods me

to see if I move. One dsy I will suprise her, but we won't go there.

Tie a brick to it. That will stop it from floating away?

Or aim it at a reef. Wont float away then.

Invent a boomerang kon tiki. Hopefully it will sail off to Australia.

Teach it to come to a whistle. Wont hear you 2 ks out but at least you'll know its obedient.

Give it baked beans for breakfast, might still float away but at least it will go out a bit faster (fartster)..

Invent a disposable kon tiki. But then again there all disposable really arent they.

Particularly the ones that have owners who set them about 20 metres away from you when your fishing. Dispose of them as well. Gaff them and chop them up for berley.

I love Kon tiki's (5ks out and laden with sharks).

Mr Hardy, your explanation made for good reading, I enjoyed what you have written. I am beginning to get very concerned over the open warfare running at present between surfcasters and those who chose to fish with other methods, torpedos especially. I christened three of my grandchildren into fishing via kites, they all graduated to become surfcasters, but they have never forgotten the fun experienced fishing distances not available to surfcasters.

I didn't know Sunset kites had gone, I did several product runs for them and wrote articles after each field test. Paul's kites are still going strong but even he [Paul] has had to take on board the growing popularity of torpedos. Obviously his business acumen is pretty astute and he has done much to work at top level to protect surfcaster's rights.

I admit I don't enjoy reading posts on these boards that play one group of anglers against another. There is no right way or wrong way to fish, the only way is the legal way and to stay within the confines as set out by the minister regarding limits.

A post has arrived today of a kontiki angler setting up alongside a surfcaster, obviously a source for annoyance. But that shoe fits both sides, I have had two surfcasters set up right alongside me when fishing Ohope Beach, annoying as there wasn't another soul within site in either direction. When I pointed out I was using a kite and I was at the mercy of wind direction, I was reminded I didn't own the beach and they would fish wherever they wanted. It only took one cast and an angler had cast across my braid line, it severed his nylon as simply as a hot knife would go through butter ... they decided to move.

That full story made the Bay Fisher magazine and it really helped to promote an understanding between the parties. It was the forerunner to the monthly 'Kite and Kontiki Report' that ran for many months.

I would love to see the owner of this site set aside a small piece of this message board for long line anglers. A place for sharing information and help to promote the products sold by Tackle Tactics. It would promote understanding and allow information to be exchanged, this to tell anglers where there is foul ground so they do not lose their end gear, share bait and set up ideas. Like it of not we are all fellow anglers who leave home and set out to seek enjoyment, and that is what fishing is really all about.

Hardy, I have enjoyed our exchange, some good has come out of it and that is exactly what message boards such as this are all about.

I used to paddle my mates long line(cheaper than a good rod) on the surf board outside my house at papamoa and get the average of 6-8 good snap plus a few gurnad in the summer months.You actually feel like you have earned those fish when you paddle 800 meters out, towing lot's of bait....thinking about sharks.
I could never catch snapper off the beach there, only small ky.
But i was the master of the papamoa pipi reef collectors

Note......This is the Surfcasting Message Board, not the kite flying, longlining, Cannon shooting message board.
My mention of the longliners at Blacks Beach on Sunday was to educate the new to fishing longliners like these guys that they need to be aware of other beach users and their rights.
Top points to one of them, who I knew, to come and tell me that they were going to fish there. I was pleased that they listened and respected my patch which I secured early in the day.
Dont think that these longliners are only fishing the car parks either. They are mobile on quads and can turn up anywhere. I have seen them fishing the gap at Renaiaka, at the top end of Ocean Beach and the rivermouth at Porangahau. They dont worry me too much if they earn their own space by getting up early and being first to the spot. I do get upset when they plop down on the beach and set up ten metres away.

Over my many years of fishing I have often seen Kontiki owners march down to the beach and send out there torpedo without even as much as a thought for the person next to them. Often the thing whizzes off in front of your rods and they dont even bat an eyelid. If you ran a poll on this site you'd get find most surfcasters have experienced this.
Few surfcasters can cause the nuisance that a kontiki owner can cause with a wayward kontiki and a "stuff anyone else attitude". Its that arrogance that creates the friction that leads to this so called "open warfare". Ive been on this site for years also and I'm afraid any kontiki owner will soon feel the ire of those with rods thanks to the actions of those in there ranks who dont show respect for others. Rightly or wrongly thats the likely result. Maybe the Kontiki makers should put up a website for there followers. Then everyone would be happy.

Rex, I have fished for more years than I care to recall. Many a time I have been surfcasting when a close neighbour has crossed my line. He hasn't read the tide and cross currents, and has either under weighted or doesn't have grip weights to suit the conditions.

Then there is the beginner, someone who can cast at forty-five degrees in any direction, consistently crossing lines. This is really noticeable in tournaments where fishing in close proximity to a fellow angler is necessary.

Don't go painting one type of beach user with black paint, there are plenty of surfcasters who have no idea of beach etiquette either, and do much to damage the reputation of fishing as a whole. Just read the Awatoto thread.

You, just like me, have the benefit of many years of experience. The people who are just into our wonderful sport are on their learning curve. A little help, understanding and tolerance will really go a long way.

I mentioned in an earlier post the site is in danger of being viewed as elitist, this thread is a perfect example. As for being a surfcasting message board, the owners may think a little differently, especially as they sell all the equipment for those who enjoy fishing using other methods.

I have tried to stay out of this discussion but.............
Yes TT does sell long line gear weather it be for boats , kontikis or kites etc and I am working on another way of getting big shark baits out behind the waves.
The biggest problem with kontikis I believe that it is mostly perceived , it's the old story 10% of the fisherman catching 90% of the fish.
I believe that education is the key. When we take the boat out we can catch a lot of fish but we rarely bring back more than a feed.
I have played around with kontikis and find it a pretty boring way to fish , it can be interesting pulling the line back in.
This is where the first problem raises its ugly head because if you have hooked fish you don't want, most of the time they cannot be returned successfully .
May be reducing the number of hooks could be looked at.

Ha ha! I suggested reducing hook numbers in an OPINION article in Fishing News Magazine a year or so ago. Reaction to that just fell short of violence. Seems the longliners are either very hungry or just greedy and want to fill all their hooks all the time. You can only justify so many bin fulls of snapper each year. Mind you with a $3000 to $5000 investment maybe they want to justify the expense to themselves.

I still reckon that 5 hooks would be more than fair. How about fishing lures on the longline. There are plenty of places where one could fish their longline out to gamefish waters towing a marlin lure. Now that could be fun, towing a marlin chugger up and down the coast 2km offshore at Waihau Bay or off the west coast. You may need a spare battery for your winch though before you land your 300kg Blue Marlin.
You seem to be taking all this a bit personally Hangler, just chill out and enjoy your fishing whatever you do. Dont report longline catches here as we are not interested. Great to hear that you are achieving some local catches. Our heaviest snapper for the Pania Surfcasting Club fishing last weekend was from East Clive. A thresher shark was weighed from Awatoto and kahawai at the river mouths.
I just think that we need to respect each others space. Two surfcasters might need 20 m between them but a surfcaster and a longliner need a lot more.

Gary, I would like to support you on your perceived catches taken on torpedoes, sadly I can't. To date I have seen one snapper caught on local beaches, my personal tally is nil, and I don't expect that to change any time soon and it worries me not one jot.

Right, so we cut down the hook limit to five claiming this levels the playing field. Someone fishing for Kahawhai at Awatoto will therefore reduce their casts to five every hour and a half, about the time it takes to make a short set and retrieve.

I remain fascinated at idea of seeing bins full of fish, I never seen this yet and I consider a good set to be when I land three fish. My tally so far this year works out at three sets a session, with a total return of six fish per session (not set). This compares very favourably with others I know who run torpedoes, there seems to be a lot of highly vivid imagination running riot around this thread.

Information sharing. This is interesting, especially as three weeks ago I reported a large shoal of Kingfish working very close to shore behind the aquarium on Napier's Marine Parade. Isn't that useful for local surfcasters? Note I gave the correct location, not spot 'X'.

Anyway, I think my time on this message board has run it's course. In the period I have posted I have read nothing but complaints about the state of the fishery, a petition regarding how poor the fishing is, there are no gurnard around, and the methods used by other anglers.

I have never experienced such negativity in all the years I have enjoyed the sport. I got my first rod when I was eleven years of age so that makes it about fifty-nine years ago. I have no idea why my fish tally and enjoyment does not reflect those moans. I find it rare to visit the beach and not come home with a fish, last Sunday eleven fish for our party of three anglers. When you do catch fish they are described as rubbish, crap or s**tfish, this leaves me cold.

I do appreciate I am the odd one out as I love fishing, I get a huge kick out of helping others. I love what is on offer and how easy it is to take a fish home for dinner. I love our beaches, the variety of fish to be caught, some for dinner some to be returned but all good sport. We have some wonderful spots around Napier, and the angler's reward is pleasing. Two of three gurnard and a couple of Kahawhai are very acceptable for most. To be blessed with a lovely clean sea and a pristine environment is a gift I hold dear, also the patience to know one day a nice snapper will happen along, but if that doesn't occur I am not about to pack a huge sad over it.

Carry on complaining chaps, I'm sure one day someone may listen to you but it's unlikely they will take and notice. Is it any wonder with attitudes such as this clubs are not patronized and membership is so low when compared to the size of the local population? Is it any wonder why by far the majority of anglers have never heard of the NZACA.

As for chilling out, I will do so by visiting a local beach. I will have either rods or torpedo in hand and enjoy every single moment, including an expectation of fish for dinner.

Right' let the put downs begin, it seems to be the usual way.

Sadly I think you are clutching at straws Hangler. There’s a vast difference between someone accidently casting over someone’s line, and some arrogant kontiki owner who doesn’t give a sh#t in there greedy desperation to catch as many fish as they possibly can at any cost. Sadly your argument is flawed .

However, for me this topic as been covered so many times. Its just a yawn, and gives Snappa a sense self justification and we can’t have that. And I feel sorry for Trev who really just wanted some advice and I'm sure is a responsible Kontiki owner. Good luck with your endeavours Trev.

What does amuse me are these silly b##ggers who constantly give you the opportunity to stir it up by taking exception to your posts. You are certainly an excellent fisherman when it comes to the vernacular. You sling out verbal lines about such things as mystery non fail gurnard baits that work while pilchard, bonito and anchovy fail. Then you mischievously assure all that the fishery is in great heart and that your hauling them in, despite a great deal of evidence to the contrary. Then you invite discussion about the hated kontiki’s knowing full well it will wind every one up. And one by the bites come, like hungry snapper at an anchovy convention. Well caught Mr Hangler, and good luck to you. I’m’ sure it fills in the time between pension days. A pleasant reprieve from writing to the appropriate minister about the price of stamps and longing for the return of milk tokens.

I’m not as cynical as some, who think you’re a stooly for the fishing industry, probably a disgruntled trawler man who can’t afford Viagra. I like to believe those who post on here are honest and look forward to you sharing some positive revelations about how you go about achieving your catches. The coming months will hopefully lead to a few full chilly bins and sights like this for all. Hopefully we will all get to share in these moments’ rather than hearing about the mechanical drudgery of kontiki’s. My 1.5kg shoalie... Caught this weekend on a rod.

I am going to have a go at answering Trevs question. I have not heard of any sort of device that will stop your kontiki drifting away when the line has been cut .
It all depends on were the line has been cut so let's say its been cut on the stoppered section as long as you have a weight fixed at the kontiki end you should be ok , it may drift but it should give you time to organise a rescue .
These new auto pilot jobs may be a different story as they don't like a heavy weight .

One of the problems with radio control I am told is these rise and fall of the waves interferes with the signal . Programmed GPS would be the answer.

i look at it this way i am both a surf caster and i also use a kontiki,i think we would be better bi*chn bout the trawler boats going around and dropping there net how is that fair on the snapper and us fisho , as soon as they get into the net its over either going to die from being crushed,die from getting towed around for hours ,or meany other ways i am sure, yet using a long line doesn't mean that its a guarantee feed , you still loose fish ive lost more fish from the waves than i wish to count yet ive also put smaller snapper back to swim off happy,some time i think i would of been better buying a couple of fillets than couple packs of bait . i disagree with the people who set there kontiki at 6am and only think to start pulling in after 1pm only to have had it drift and every thing on the line is exhausted and 90% dead, back to the point trawlers pull up tones and tones of snapper,yet how many tones are the breading fish producing i say the numbers wouldn't work out think we would be better off working together to try get the boats quot er lowed or last least put in place a 15k no trawler zone around the coast line

only problem I see with that is if you get a boat coming along it will cut the line- then you still loose the gear

I'm hardly one to comment being as I dont own one of the little beasts but yeah. That 10 metre line between the tiki and the sure thing trailer would be at risk of being cut I guess. Dunno enough about them really but does seem to be a problem.

I have a customer with a sure thing which releases your hook line and baits off a drum feeder, it seems to be a bit temperamental he seems to sorting it out by adding more weight and length but it has potential.

The Shorething doesn't work on HB Stoney beaches due to the small stones jamming up the spool and not deploying the longline. I had to send it back

Hi All

Saw a classic " Fail " today. Went down for a Incoming tide Fish. Two hours before High water.
Right in the guts of the high tide hole I fish. Yep there are two blokes putting out a Konitiki. Now there is like 10 kilometres of beach. And at the moment only three good surfcasting holes in that 10 K. So why oh why do they have to set in a hole. After all they fish well beyond the hole when they deploy.

So I am pushed out of the hole, and had to go three hundred metres down the beach to the other hole. Which isnt quite as good.

They deploy, I cast out. Quite a strong southerly wind blowing. And I was north of them. They must have just set the Kontiki for a five minute run, or the lowest setting they have.

Half an hour later I see the kontiki, its drifted my way, and seems to be comming ashore. Yep its past me now and getting closer to the shore.

In fact its going to go over my line. So I am forced to wind in. Thats the end of my days fishing. Oh look the kontiki is now on the beach. One guy trots down to retrieve it. The other trying to wind the line onto the winch. Onto his shoulder the kontiki goes. As he goes past me, not a word of apology, no nothing. And yet they saw I had to wind in. Otherwise I would have caught a Kontiki. Suppose I could have barbecued it on the beach

. I was just a tad upset.

Now those types of people do not help the cause, so my kontiki Phobia is now even stronger. And I will have to up my medication.

It's just a sign of the times they could have struck up a conversation with you . There are surf casters out there that act the same , some even try to tell you it's you fault the crossed over your line.

To be honest Phil on that ten k section of beach there are really only three of us that fish it regularly. Its a typical flat sandy west coast beach. That does have a few good holes. If ya go looking for them at low tide, then fish on the incoming.

Although this year I must admit, I have had more success at low tide. But I need to put the waders on then. Whereas with the incoing and two hours before high, its just gumboots.

Now I do have to say, there are two guys we know, who used to be mad keen surfcasters and are our mates. But now are so into Kontikieing But they set far enough away from us not to take the best of the hole. And they always set to the north of us, as the wind is general blowing from the south and there is a slight current trending northwards. So if they get a bit of course it doesnt interfere with us.

And they did tell us, why they like the holes to set in. And the reason is that generally where there is a hole, there is a steeper bank at high tide. So when they wind in the Kontiki, from winch to emerging line, it comes in clean. That is no sand on it. As it isnt coming in on a flat section of beach. So they don't have to have a towell to remove the sand as the retrieve takes place.

So it isnt so much the hole they are using, but the steeper section of beach. But they being also surfcasters, and yep they each put a rod out when the Kontiki is set. And they know beach etiquite. Now how do we train the rest, well okay a lot of the rest. Not all Kontiki setters are pig ignorant. Just a few. And it is those that spoil it and bring a bad name upon the Kontiki Ites.

A long lne off a boat doesnt worry me in the slightest. In fact a long line of a beach, that is far enough away from me, that won't interfere with me. Isnt set in one of the few holes. Well I can live with that. As long as I keep taking my medication.
