Yes,they were great days,i done day and block release which meant away from garage for 6 or 8 weeks at a time,i think 2 or 3 times a year plus evening classes.It is what you had to do to become QUALIFIED (i still have my certs on office wall,try not to look at dates though)
Seriously though I strongly think this is the only real way to qualify,not some half baked scheme dreamed up by some bunch of quangoes out to fill there bank accounts.
Any form of accreditation outside this format is open to abuse as been proved in the past.
Whilst there is a shortage of skilled staff these schemes will keep appearing to make it easier to get some kind of qualification.
The real answer is to encourage school leavers to join the trade and have proper training
