Dont tell them anything at all except a long list of possibilities for the given fault. I've started telling people about my Astra H experiences-300+V for a brake light not working-New REC and coding, computers used for diagnosing the most "simple" faults like horn not working with side lights. They are then quite relieved to get away with less than a hundred quid

I'm personally fed up with the google lot-much worse than the old "man in the pub". So I have decided to be more ruthless and give away nothing except general advice to the public and those local garages that cant even be bothered to check for HT or a blown fuse before calling me out
