Hello Tony, I always carry out tests without measuring the engine temperature or speed, but do check that the temperature gauge is showing hot & or that the cooling fan has cut in.I also usually use the vehicles tacho for engine speed. The reason is that it is quicker for me to wait the 40 seconds it counts down(diesel smoke test only on my machine),when you select to not measure these items, than to actually stop the engine, remove the dipstick, measure the correct probe length, insert the probe, find a suitable rpm sensing point, restart the vehicle, make sure it's up to temperature,do the test ,then remove it all again & clean everything off. I do take time to get the cat hot enough in order to pass, which sometimes takes ages(one took about half an hour to get through recently). If the first test fails on lambda indicating an obvious air leak or the co & hc are way too high, then i don't spend too long on them. I expect i will get told to use my speed & temp sensors on my next inspection, after posting this. When i asked my local Vosa inspector when he thought they would get the EGA & DSM's connected to the vosa pc,he said that he didn't think that it would happen because not many cars fail on emissions & vosa aren't that worried about it anyway. Regards,Andrew
