At degree level, it's incumbent on student to have initiative and read between lines, look from different angles etc. " No it isn't. I've worked with enough degree qualified individuals to know this is wishful thinking but far from the truth. It's merely more fact filling and box checking. In all cases (educated or not) it is up to the individual to learn to think for themselves. Our society of course does not reward people who try and so the most successful (inc graduates of tertiary education) don't. In fact, the reason why we are here (on this page) is proof of this; we are dissatisfied with that reality. Education vs none as proof of anything meaningful about capacity to think and reason is snobbery. You need to provide some good evidence to prove otherwise, but if it's circular (what I think is what university educated think therefore educated people can think reasonably) you're not proving anything. I would posit it's an impossibility to try to make such a proof, so why try?
