In my experience, it's literally a hard and fast fact - and there must be studies that go a long way to prove it - that in the MAJORITY of cases, with a significant minority that doesn't conform to the norm, those Not exposed to using, practising and developing critical thinking skills in their education, normally at a Higher level, are far more susceptible to emotive-logical propaganda / advertising.
Take diet/health, for example, of course there's the point that healthy food is prohibitively expensive, esp at the moment, but even long before the banking crisis it was a fact that the majority of poor food choices were among the less educated. It may go against one's pride in being independent of 'the system' oneself, but is nonetheless true.
Same with choice (and ability) re reading matter, which has a big bearing on this. Of course the broadaheets are totally $hit in their own way, but the Sun / Mail Express etc are far more cartoon-like, and were out and out pro Brexit for a long time.
Your example: "Hunter gatherers in the Amazon or the slum scavengers in Mumbai probably possess more of it than the average educated city worker" I don't have an issue with. But the context is key: if we were talking about how to survive on zero money the city worker is mostly goosed in comparison.
If it's about falling for or seeing through a 'man of the people' blame-hate publicity campaign, I believe those used to Sun-Mail-Express style 'stories' targetting foreigners and the EU for literally years in advance, were set up for the Brexit sting.
Imo, the experience of it happening and the picking over the bones after make it certain that the populist Leave campaign planners - like Trump's - knew very well that the majority of their support would come from the less educated more cartoony 'news' consumers; and that, although there were arguments that would reach a significant proportion of the more educated, that was not their key hunting ground.
So, educational level reached impacts on what level of cartoony $hit-rag you read, which in turn impacts statistically on your likelihood to be swept up by stings like the Leave campaign.
