When did the ruling class in the US ever fund anything without a pretty immediate payoff? The only reason they did it in the first place was the humiliation of sputnik. There is definite profit in proving socialism is inferior! But once the point has been made .... Onto the next thing. And anyway if it really is so effing dangerous, with all those crappy probabilities, why not quit while you are ahead? Harold Wilson did. Its not like there was anyone else about to grab the moon at the time, and now that there is (namely China), you will note the reactionary US is reacting. The way the reactionary US reacted to Sputnik. You see how nationally humiliating the shuttle disasters were. |
