Yes you are right, 5% of all the people who have ever summitted everest did it more than once, overwhelmingly sherpas, and of the remainder almost exclusively professional climbers.
Substantially fewer, parenthetically, than the number of people who went to the moon twice (25%).
5% of all the # of people who went to the moon is less than one person :-)
Everest is definitely not one of the most inhospitable places on earth, how many people have been to the bottom of the Marianas trench twice? AHA! :-)
As for which new territories have been abandonded !?!?! What about the Vikings in North america? What about the Jamestown colony? The Roanoake colony? Easter Island?
But your point is, which new territories have the human race abandoned. Am I to believe that the human race has abandoned the moon ?!?! By precise extension of your argument, tt was not abandoned by the human race at all, it was abandoned by the US Congress! Both India and China have a human lunar program as we speak, but at the time of Apollo they were simply 3rd world economies. That seems to be pretty good progress to me.
Why did Congress abandon it? Because they are solely answerable to voters and lobbyists. By Apollo 17 what were the viewing figures for the 6th landing? Miniscule, that's the voters taken care of, who either want lower taxes or welfare instead. Not a vote-getter. As for the lobbyists ... They don't want to be supporting government programs, they want to be transferring wealth from public to provate hands on a large scale, and calling the shots in the process.
