At my school, in the late 1970s, we had an ex-BBC (I think) reel to reel computer; it took up an entire large room and the best it could do by way of entertainment, was to produce a print out of Snoopy in mathematical symbols... I think the author got one thing wrong (that I know of) and that's the whole depth of field argument. The depth of field is the distance fore and aft of the subject that is in acceptable focus; thus, I think the debunker is saying that subject didn't have to precisely focused as the depth of field would 'take up the slack'.
