Motor Codes........... Again #

Here is a story for you...... A lady was booked in to us yesterday with a 2002 Honda CRV 2.0 petrol for a diagnostic check relating to a sporadic misfire and illuminated MIL. The car had a level 2 (full) service at the local Honda main dealer last month costing £356 and the misfire developed the day after the service.
The car had been back into Honda for diagnostic work and I saw the report stating that they had checked the cam lobes, tested the fuel injectors and adjusted the valve clearances. They said the next step was to replace the throttle body and had quoted £1100 for the work, but also commented that there was no promise that would be the cure.

The owner came to us on recommendation but was very wary as if everyone was out to rip her off!
The car seemed to be running well for me so I first checked the emissions and they were fine. A fault scan of the engine controller showed P0301 - misfire cyl 1. I thought I would first look at the coils and plugs before a compression test and soon found the no. 1 spark plug like this.........

Now I know that no one is perfect and we are all potentially venerable to making mistakes but surely this is the most basic of basic checks to be done relating to a misfire. After an explanation and confirming that the fault was most noticeable in cold and damp conditions, the customer agreed to a new set of plugs and was pleased that the repair was straight forward, quick and not expensive.

Needless to say I checked the Motor Industry Codes web site and the Honda garage mentioned are of course members. How do they get away with operating like this?? when the majority of us technically capable independents are frowned upon for not signing up to motor codes.

Chris, Now I must explain that I do not intend to start another witch hunt against you or motor codes but if you are serious about motor codes sponsoring Top Technician 2010 this needs to be addressed. I also do not promote slagging off the work of other garages but I have advised the owner of the Honda CRV to complain about the way she was treated in this case to the highest level.

I just thought this might interest some of you.

Heres a guy that came to us yesterday with his Audi A2 that went into his local dealer a ( Motor Codes Subscribed Member ) for a rattle on his engine, after parting with £103.42 for there checks he was told that he needed a complete new exhaust cost £900. He came away and ended up at ours. We checked his exhaust, the problem was a loose heatshield, after fitting a jubilee clip to secure the rattling heatshield he went away with a bill for under a fiver.

Mark I know for a fact that this customer contacted motor codes regarding this problem, and to this day he has not heard a thing.

If this continues the "super complaint" threat (whether real or just a myth - but that's another debate) will not go away but will emerge again later when consumers wake up to the apparently empty promise of Motor Codes.

I would not want to be associated with an institution which itself then becomes a major defendant in the complaint.

It may well be the case that the only reputable garages will be recognised as those who have NOT signed up!

Another one that springs to mind. Toyota Corolla. Customer had new clutch fitted at a so called Motor Codes Approved garage (Independent), has had nothing but trouble since. He has been back three times (crunching in reverse)to be told "We only guarantee the parts not the labour"

He asked us to remove the gearbox and see what the problem was. New plate fitted only, pressure plate worn to hell and bearing just as bad. We fitted a new clutch kit and all was well.

He went back to the garage with old clutch in hand and eventually got a refund after threats of trading standards.

No wonder this trade has a bad reputation. I do honestly think the trade needs some form of Licence/policing. I would gladly sign up to somthing that was in the interests of the customer and the garage if it was going to do some good. Money making schemes like Motor Codes is not the way forward.

Initially I thought the only thing that may have converted me to supporting this Code was in cases such as are shown in the above reports, where Motor codes should have really gone to town on the investigation and then removed their membership if found guilty. This should then have been published within the trade so we all knew enforcement was happening.

But, the trouble with this is how do you fight a case if your customer told you to just fit the clutch center plate or asked for just one injector to be replaced? Before you know it there will be a paper trail a mile long justifying every little thing and signed by your customer in case there is a problem.

Would you just fit one injector or would you fit all four to cover your backside, and if you quote for all four and then the customer goes elsewhere and they only fit one and the fault is sorted you stand to be reported as a rogue. So again before you know it your quote will be a mile long showing all possibilities (if that is possible).

So, really I do not know how this could ever work, there are to many varying degrees of satisfactory work, standards, equipment, training, buildings etc etc.

Same would apply to government enforcement, just how could it be policed?

I do think Steve Nicholas has a valid point.

I have a real problem with this whole motor codes thing from Mason,I would love to know what action he is pursuing against a Honda dealer that has quoted an £1100 bill to replace a throttle body to cure a misfire a day after a service when all the car had was a cracked plug !!

Mason is sponsored by the SMMT,so dealer orientated and led, he claims to represent the independants, what a load of rubbish, he cares not one iota for independants and has virtually none in his crap scheme, I hope his whole scheme goes bankrupt, he is doing nothing for honest independant traders who have customers queing a mile out of the door with main dealer referrals to sort those "awkward jobs" that they can't sort,

The story behind this situation with the Honda owner really rattled me and I felt I should post the details as it has been a regular topic of conversation on here. I did not post this subject to grab any head lines or put anyone down, that does not interest me.

The real issues are that the garage in question either do not have any quality control procedures in place or simply don’t care. I have also checked the ATA registers and from what I can see there are no ATA accredited technicians employed there. That would at least be a start for them to prove their competence at the job. As I said no one is perfect but if I worked with these guys I would want to promote their strengths and build on their weaknesses, or find them a new career in some other trade.

Motor codes cannot be held directly responsible for these actions of this Honda dealership in question but they should endeavour to correct the situation and ensure it does not happen again. I would much rather see the garage be made to train its staff and improve the way they operate, than be booted off the scheme and continue to trade in a potentially dishonest manner.

Most of us could probably tell stories about bad repair jobs or exuberant invoices until we are blue in the face and of course it is only the bad jobs that you generally read about in these cases. As Steve said it is the associations with these garages involved in the ‘rip off’ cases that we all hear of that strikes a nerve with us guys.

I was chatting to some of the guys at the ADS Harrogate conference a few weeks ago about the main dealers mentality when it comes to customer service. Now again this does not necessarily mean that all main dealers are out to get you but one of the possible suggestions was that maybe there is a tactic where by an extortionate price is quoted for a repair in the hope that the customer will agree to the extra work of say £1100. Then the customer later gets the call from the dealer to say actually your car is fixed and it’s only going to cost you £500! So the customer thinks the Dealer is fantastic and has saved them a load of money. Another suggestion was that some main dealers just want to get as much money from each job while it is there and are not too fussed if the customer does not come back next time.

As Graham said, how will all these schemes, codes or licensing be policed??
This is such a tricky situation we all are facing and I don’t know what the answers or final outcomes will be. But I for one am committed to promoting the true professionals in this trade, as I have said before this is more than just a job for me.

The upshot of this is that I now have a new customer that trusts us and will come back to us next time work is required on the car.

The true test of customer confidence, and if we can demonstrate it if called to account then that is worth more than any logo above the door.

Thats as long as "You" and the rest of us dont get shut down for not being a memember of Motor Codes.

Which would leave the door wide open for the Sharks and rip off merchants and dodgy repairers that are registered to carry on doing what they do best.

I Heard about one this week where a Main Dealer did a Health check on a Porsche Boxter and said that it required £2500 spending on it, two items that spring to mind were Fitting of a Headlamp bulb at 1.5 Hours @ £120 per hour. and the fitting of front Brake pads @ £600.

I am trying to get a copy of the estimate to see if its genuine but if it is then they are really taking the ?iss.

A Customer of the RAC wouldn't let them bring his Car to my Garage as he told the RAC man that I was too Expensive @ £30 per hour.

I told the RAC Man that if he was unhappy at that price he was better going elsewhere as he would be really upset to find out that its actually £45.00 per hour.

This Job is now going from one extreme to the other and the customers just have no idea of what is a genuine reasonable price and what is a rip off.

A Customer with an Astra came to see if I could code read it for her as her engine management light was on, but when I told her that it would be £35.00, she decided it was under warranty from the Main Dealer, and she was going to take it back.

She then came back to us as the dealer that sold her the car wanted £70.00 to code read it to find out what the problem was and if find out if it was covered by the so called warranty,
( but they advised her that it wasn't covered if it was an electrical fault )

I Code read it and it came up with "NOT PRESENT FAULT, COOLANT TEMP SENSOR"

So I advised her that a new sensor was about £10, so i would order one and keep it on the shelf, and if the Light came back on and it logged the same fault again, she could pop in for it fitting, ( As it was impossible to test it if the fault was not present at the time of testing, or spend several hours or days trying to prove it was faulty )

She said yes but, Are you going to charge me £10.00 for the sensor even if it doesn't cure it. ??

I said I think you ought to go back to the Dealers.

Tony , i posted a while back about a customer who has his trousers pulled down when he took his astra to a main dealer , the customer never got any response back from the "codes"so looks like they were happy with the dealer or they didn't bother to follow the case through .This main dealer has ata registered techs but this only proves the techs are capable of fixing the car but doesn't assure anyone that they wont get ripped off !!.

Had to laugh at your post about the coolant sensor , only the other week i got a call from a customer to say his eobd light was "on again", previously looked at the car about 8 months ago .When i mentioned about doing a diagnostic test and price ,he drew my attention to previous test and repair and was puzzled why it should cost him again , turned out to be a misfire from a cracked plug that another garage had fitted

I have had customers on the phone who i previously carried out a geometry set up, they explained they had bent the front suspension etc but then asked "will that cost me again"

Had a relation on mine in the other day to get a wheel bearing done , on stripping it down i said that the abs sensor wont come out and there is a possibility to damage the sensor when the bearing goes past , so after getting the nod i took the bearing out and unfortunately took about 1mm from the end off the abs sensor .
He called me yesterday to say i should pay for it as it was ok before i took the bearing out

.What bothers me is i did the right thing except get him to sign a disclaimer so how would that stand under the motor codes if it was your word against the customers ? the customer could quite easily say i never informed them .Or is it a case of getting a disclaimer set up that covers my arse ... what do you guys/gals do ?

why not set up a organisation of Independent garages yourselves. (a few of us in Ireland are looking in to it) We are the best qualified people to monitor our own trade as we know exactly what is right or wrong in this trade, no profession. It may cost more than £75 but if done correctly it could surpass all schemes already in place and stand to you/us in the long run.

Although I understand exactly where you are coming from I find your response a bit naive, at the end of the day this dealership was quoting £1100 to cure a £2.00 fault !, that they had caused !,Whether their techs were accredited or not under ATA proves what an absolute farce all these "bolt on" qualifications are,they are totally worthless unless someone, ie the "foreman" in old language,is quality assuring the work going through the workshop.

I will turn this thread 180 degrees with my experience of a Honda dealer in Ipswich that I had to send a Civic type R, non starter, young girl owner two days ago, this poor girl aged 18 bought this car on a mates reccomendation, loads of e-bay extra's fitted, turns out the car was a cat C write off, and when the dealer got the thing started the workshop dissapeared in oil smoke ,engine blown, this dealership bent over backwards to keep my customers parents informed on this car who were funding the bill, the thing is now going to the crusher,

My point on this is that there are a lot of good dealers out there, with highly qualified techs, yes they charge premium rates, but I will stand by my Honda dealer,as many others that I have contact with, My maxim is to do an honest job for a fair return, sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, customer satisfaction is top in my book so sometimes I will work for nowt, that will be re-couped later on with an old clanker that needs loads of welding !!

To comment on Mark Murphy's point, I have on a few occasions in the past, suggested on this forum that we should consider forming our own association.

We already have one, loosely speaking, in that we are the guys who are bothered to spend extra time improving our knowledge and communicating with others in our profession so that we can better serve our customers - and, yes, thereby make our businesses stronger.

To comment on Tony Bickers' last item, we should remain positive - we do not hear about all the good things done for customers, and all the fair deals from dealers or whoever. If we were to hear those stories we would be swamped!

Let's face it, if dealers were to charge the same labour rates as us they could not invest in all the tech they need to be a dealer. We certainly could not afford to!

The issue is that rip-offs occur throughout the market and, as sombody pointed out earlier, we are sometimes victims of unscrupulous "customers".

Your right, I am a bit naive. These things don't run themselves you need good marketing & legal expertise behind them, nether of which I have a bog about. It is easy to say do it yourself but it would take an awful lot of time and money to get a scheme off the ground. However if it is left to profit driven marketing experts to try force you guys to "sign up" to prove you are a good garage who do you think will benefit the most?
I also feel that your Honda dealer did nothing spectacular "keeping the customers informed". Surly any reputable dealer would do this(or am i being naive again?

I'm not sure about that but I was just trying to be diplomatic in my post. Maybe pro-active rather than re-active??

I would hope that some organisation would step in and sort out the issues at this Honda dealer. Surely Honda UK would not be too proud of their procedures.

To be honest I think the CRV owner is too timid to complain persistantly enough to get some action on this. She is just pleased that the car is fixed and she did not spend £1100 not fixing it!

Motor Codes
As you are aware, when we asked all Service Partners to re-register for the programme, we indicated that we would be adopting the Motor Codes Ltd Code of Practice for Service and Repair as the minimum standard for HSP’s and asked all members to sign-up before the end of March 2010. We believe this Code has established itself as a cost-effective, consumer orientated initiative that has received significant support from many areas of the trade, consumer groups and Government.

To encourage HSP’s to register well before the deadline, we have negotiated a reduced membership and subscription rate, the details of which are attached to this email.

To save any confusion, we would like to re-iterate that we expect all registered HSP’s to have signed-up for the Motor Codes scheme, or an alternative OFT approved Code, by the end of March 2010.

Confusion being the operative word

Motor Codes (non approved by OFT)
Alternative OFT approved Code (approved by OFT).......such as??

I left the Unipart Car Care Centre many years ago as they were trying to make me sign up to a code scheme costing £700:00 per year, now I see Unipart are going to try and get their members to sign up to motor codes, the whole code system is a big mess

Lets just get ONE scheme in place approved by the OFT and backed by the government and stop ALL the confusion for customers and garages

And Lets Call it Someting like. errrrrrrrrrrr "TRADING STANDARDS"

That sounds like a good name for it.

Why not just give the trading Standards a bit of an investment to allow them to do their job better if they can't manage as they are at the moment. ?

I know that several Car Dealers are Trading Standards Approved and Also some Repair garages are too.

At the end of the Day anyone that rips the customer off or does a bad job is accountable to the trading standards already, so why do we need another complication adding to what we already have. ?

Or Am I missing some really important part of what the "Motor codes" is about. ??

( Which is Very Possible. )

I too have been a member of the 'Hella Service Partner' scheme for many years, until a few months ago when I received the annual letter. In this letter, there was a paragraph stating that I would need to be a member of this motor codes scheme! I can tell you now, Mr Mason has brain washed many of these type of companies, as the person I spoke to was in total belief that the code was literally the 'be all and end all' quality audits for garages! Until that was, I explained that, as a Bosch Car Service Garage, we already work to an OFT approved code of conduct! I then spent a good 15 minutes or so explaining to the gentleman just what I thought of Mr Mason and his code, and what I felt it stood for! I wasn't quite as polite as this, but after me putting my view forward, the gentleman stated that they would accept the Bosch OFT Code. Hence the wording on their latest application forms! Sorry to have gone on a bit gents, but where is this all going to end up????

I completely agree about trading Standards.
We are approved by Dorset trading Standards, but as far as I am aware all the councils are responsible for there own trading standards, its not a national thing.
Can you imagine all the councils trying to work together.

The Bosch Car Service OFT approval differs from the other schemes in that it is actually very closely monitored by Bosch.
Bosch are conscious that their branding should not be used anywhere where it could bring them into disrepute with the buying public. Hence their very strict criteria and the OFT approval, which incidentally was hard won and granted in stages.
From what I have seen and read, I don't think that the Motor Codes scheme comes close to the standards that Bosch Car Service set and maintain in their network.

Exactly what I told Hella! But Mason had them so brainwashed, that Hella believed that his code was the same if not better than Bosch's, which is another load of B******S! Someone really needs to stop this man before he makes an absolute fortune off the back of a lot of hard working people like the members of our chosen industry!!! Personally I feel the code is a money making exercise & nothing more!

I run a motoring club for women drivers and set it up after our daughter was ripped off at her first solo garage experience. I knew nothing about the industry then but a great deal about it now.

I look at the Motor Industry Service & Repair Code from the customer's point of view. In many cases the motorist is being encouraged to spend more than they would do otherwise because 70-80% of Moroe Codes subscribers are dealerships even after Unipart's recent sign up. The motorists are not told they have a choice, that other codes offer higher standards and that most dealerships are expected to operate to higher standards anyway.

But my point is to do with the suggestion that Trading Standards monitor this area in future - the problem here is that Trading Standards claim legal reasons why they cannot tell customers which businesses are the best and worst; hence my setting up FOXY Lady Drivers Club so we can share this feedback for members within the Club.

I don't think it is good enough when a mystery shopping survey reveals a bad garage and then the monitoring organisation takes ages to do anything about it to safeguard the customer.

I then set up FOXY Choice to help promote the genuinely good garages, fastfits and dealerships to women, providing they can sign our female friendly promise to 'never overcharge, patronise or sell women services they don't need or want'. I think that is a better pledge than the Motor Codes one but I would say that wouldn't I...

So there is a third way to state or industry regulation - get a totally independent organisation that puts the customer first to monitor standards, provide comprehensive garage information about standards, services and facilities and boot out any offending garage pretending to be good, after what turns out to be legitimate complaints of consequence.

I would have suggested Which? (and FOXY could do it easily) but they are happily promoting garages in their Local members' network for no other reason than personal recommendation which isn't a reassuring standard for me.

Just a few foxy thoughts from me, putting the customer's perspective for your consideration ;-).

Nice to see another point of view on this difficult subject. Just taken a quick look at Foxy website. Some observations:-
Foxy offer thier members the oppertunity to recommend garages.
The major requirement to appear Foxy approved is £60 per annum.
Subscribers are invited to offer members a discount, so other customers must be being overcharged then?
Motor Codes are advertising heavily on the site.
I don't think overcharging by bad garages is limited to female customers. I know plenty of men who have been poorly treated as well.
Is this not sexual discrimination?

And another thing. How about a code for customers. Most of mine are regulars and we all get along fine, but every now and then a bad one gets through the door. I'm sure we all have horror stories.

I propose new customers should promise to:-

Pay when the job is finished.
Not phone every 5 minutes.
Not expect free diagnosis.
Understand vehicles are complex.
Be polite.
Answer the phone.
Never patronise(my mate down the pub, read on the internet etc)

I could go on all night, feel free to add some more
