That's the problem with snappy quotes; you miss the detail in the excitement to go 'boom!' And drop your mic. At 1st may 28000 deaths with covid as underlying reason, 36000 where covid is mentioned (so not necessarily cause of death) and 50000 excess deaths based on average. Given the shut down except for covid in the health service it is not inconceivable that excess deaths are rising now faster because those who need medical help are not getting it in the capacity they need, which could argues willems point for him. Excess deaths are an indicator there is a problem, but without detail we are left only with assumptions past knowing that covid can indeed kill. But so can (and does); cancer, accidents, diabetes and so on. And, as time goes on, more people will be sitting at home clapping for the nhs and yet unable to get the help they need when they need it to prevent premature death from other issues too. Aside from a desire to see the world as black and white I don't see the attraction in shouting down people for arguing the same common causes we had before this virus hit the streets. It's frustrating to not be able to outline very real concerns with a lockdown implemented by a govt no one trusts where it's clear to some at least that it's more about social control than saving lives (because it hasn't been done in any way which could possibly even stamp out the spread of an ordinary cold, and yet is set to go on and on in the same half arsed manner). And yet, most are championing it as their own idea, and a mere govt afterthought. If you want people to follow your rules you must first get them to believe in it as though it were their own thought. When we have accompanied testing, isolation for the sick, care and effective triage for the symptomatic rather than just the near terminally ill and a short sharp no compromise lockdown period to kill (not just slow down) the spread, I might start thinking there's something positive in it. As it is we are looking at a long term social control order with no more meat in it as an effective tool at combatting the spread than a cucumber sandwich. Respond with a quick graph or figure as you like. But I hope you'll also take some time to sit down and have a think about what an extended lockdown is achieving, and what dragging it on longer in its half arsed state will do. Answer on a postcard; or don't. Not really interested in angry or self righteous argument. Neither the energy or inclination. Worn out, and worn down ATM but I do think fairly reasonable questions as willem has posted should only be met with the reaction they are getting if he was posting comment on the sun website. I'd like to see more in depth teasing out of data here, which may lean different directions . At least it would have been discussed instead of just being preached.
