Where there's been no test my wife is putting frailty old age - even when people have died of respiratory illness and family members have had covid. The absence of corona on death certificate does not mean it's something else. Countries with lax lockdowns or social distancing combined with ineffective public health policies have seen higher mortality than those with rigorous testing and isolation. https://www.ft.com/content/a26fbf7e-48f8-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441 The excess mortality rose very quickly and has come down since lockdown suggesting it's the virus not lockdown. Next week will likely be lower again. Countries such as Finland and Austria have not seen large spikes in excess mortality. Sweden which didn't lockdown, but isolated, has. Wuhan was able to set up clean and Covid hospitals, Germany just has the capacity. The UK deaths have a root cause - the lack of NHS capacity to cope with a real virus pandemic because the government does not care and actually sees an advantage in the deaths of vulnerable people. We could follow the example of many other countries and have much lower mortality. Without testing, tracing and isolation (not lockdown) government policy is still a cull. This policy will require longer lockdown. Advocates of no lockdown are not calling for testing though because of course their argument largely relies on denial of severity rather than finding real solutions. Not as bad as first thought is a meaningless concept - we had no knowledge of how bad it would be and still don't - voices against lockdown were claimining it was a hoax at the outset so it's been considerably worse than first thought in some quarters. Most of the hospital planning now is about how to maintain a service during further waves. SARS and MERS were eradicated. SARS2 won't be because our lives are worthless.
