Michael Foot was unelectable because the momentum of public opinion was against him .. Archived Message

The right had proven, during the 1970s that they could parry the British Labour Party for one long, dreary decade. Foot didn't really show that he had a way to outflank that, and so the right grabbed the opportunity to propose a systemic change. The electorate could see more of the same under Labour (whether Labour's fault or not) and drank the kool-aid. Since the 2008 crash & bailouts, the momentum has been the other way - enough of the electorate probably basically know that the only way out of this hell, if there is one, will be some kind of a systemic change going the other way. Keith is right - paraphrasing, all Corbyn can really do is show a clear vision and stick to it (the big picture). And then reiterate it but stay on message. He should not react too much to the political intrigues in my opinion, even if they are very close to home: If he does not openly react, then this registers to a large extent as a defeat for the other side in what is essentially a psychological operation. If an MP is elected as Labour and the party expels him, the situation will likely re-equilibrate at election time one way or another, assuming the constituents want to be represented by Corbyn's policies: Either the expelled MP will be elected as an independent who votes with Corbyn, or a Corbynite will be elected in his place. Corbyn should stay focused, and if he wins he wins, and if he doesn't he doesn't. But if he loses, it won't be through being distracted. - Shyaku
