Liarbour has been in a crisis of legitimacy all my life Archived Message

When I were a lad, a perennial subject on R4 was the realignment on the left, thought to have come when Dick Taverne turned his coat. Through the 70s, the consequences of reformism were everywhere. VAT came in, building the Mansfield ring road stopped, "temporarily", for years. After the first year at the Manor Comp (1973) the swimming baths shut "temporarily" until I was in the upper VIth (1980). These were the biggest cuts since 1929 and Liarbour did most of the dirty work after 1976, using that week's sterling crisis as a pretext. Liarbour was working, for the boss class. All Thatchler did was institutionalise the Liarbour policy of foisting the price of everything on the people who couldn't avoid it. Had Liarbour won in 1979, pensions would have been severed from average wages and linked to fraudulent measures of inflation, just like with the Tories. The Tories have been doing Liarbour's dirty work ever since.
