Much of human civilization and culture has been an exercise in promoting narrative fictions, for example... religion, over the harshness of reality. Religion and political dogmas that took over, lean towards 'comfort theory', like; one has to believe in something and prayer is such a comfort to me. We also have a strong, built-in tendency to prefer the path of least resistance, just look at the way people create pathways and cut corners all the time when we move about. Virtually everyone I know and have known wants to believe we live in a fair and just world, the thought that this is a comforting illusion makes most people feel uncomfortable.
