because I sincerely believe that religious belief is the refuge of those who cannot face the inconsequence and meaninglessness of the world. To live in this Godless world, with no belief that somehow you will be 'lucky" and that things will somehow work out for the best is not easy, particularly at times of great personal stress and difficulty - those times when people get converted to belief in God. I don't regard religious people - which includes those with superstitious beliefs - as victims or as fools or cowards, though I might have a desire to unconvert them as the consequences of believing that everything will be OK in the face of psychopathic men armed with nuclear weapons may be lethal. All of which doesn't mean I believe in a cold rational materialism and immorality...
