What I think is both disturbing and dangerous is the increasing polaristion and anger evident in contemporary politics in the UK, and in the US too. In many ways this reminds one of the divided atmosphere that existed before the English Civil War. I know that sounds a bit odd, but it's the extreme partisanship that's similar. What's happening is that the 'liberal middle-ground' is falling apart and the no-compromise wings seem to be growing in strength. Way too many emotions are being released, way too much anger aimed at the other side. The rise of English nationalism isn't something to be applauded, on the contrary. It's potentially very dangerous. It's actually reminds one of German nationalism. Here a dangerous stew of myths was cooked-up, where 'betrayal' was a central element and the idea that their was a foreign conspiracy to control the country and hold it back and down. If only we could throw off the chains we could be great again, and free! It's dangerous to let these kinds of ideas take root in the UK's politics, in my opinion. The consequences could be dire going forward. Johnson wants to undermine the very foundations of 'liberal democracy' and the role of parliament itself. Parliament as the 'enemy of the willl of the people.' Hitler had the same kind of ideas and that didn't end very well.
