No, nor me, but okay. Health. 1) The human small and large intestine are very long, up to 8.5m, whereas carnivore's are generally short in order to get the meat in and out quickly. I believe their systems are more acidic too. With respect, the fact that we have a single stomach isn't an argument that proves we are carnivores. 2) Yes, I agree, it is harder but not impossible to get everything a human needs from a plant-based diet. 3) Eating solely red meat will not provide you with everything you need. That said, I do accept that some cultures that have evolved over many thousands of years with predominantly meat-based diets, do seem to do well on it. Climate. 1) In small scale terms, yes to your point one, but on a larger scale (which it would have to be if everyone ate solely red meat),no; have you ever seen an American feedlot? 2) Insects. Again, don't disagree, although equally, see above re. the US and feedlots. Also, land doesn't have to be managed poorly, so it's not really an argument for meat eating or against plant-based diets. 3) As Mack said, in beef production you cannot remove the production of cereals and the ratio of feed and water to beef (protein) produced is highly inefficient. 4) That's not an argument for meat eating or against plant-based diets, although it is an argument for eating local, seasonally available fruit and veg. Ethical. 1) & 2) Given the necessity of cereal production in meat production, this all applies to both meat and plant based diets. 3) Fluffy badgers get shot to stop them passing on TB... All that said, I am not at all militant about this. Both my partner and my daughter are meat-eaters, whilst I and my son are not. I do think that certain people respond better to certain diets. I once read an article many years ago that posited it was something to do with blood types. Lastly, my mother died at 89 earlier this year. Up until 85, she was walking to her local town and back very regularly. She had eaten a quite spartan vegetarian diet for about 50 years. When she died, according to the hospital, she had the blood pressure of someone in their twenties, a fantastic, strong heart and a brain scan showed she had absolutely no sign of any form of dementia. P.S. I do think that meat and dairy have been overly demonised. Cheers.
