Thanks for the good faith response. I believe humans are definitely omnivores, but personally from reading and from my own experience I think red meat is the optimal food for us. I've got nothing against people eating vegetables. I still sneak a bit of cooking chocolate and occasionally have a curry or chilli with tomato sauce and maybe garlic and onion. So I'm not 100%. My biggest thing though is carbs. I think high carb foods are really bad for human health. Health. 1) From what I've read our digestive systems are very much shorter than a herbivore's and very acidic like that of a carrion eater. Similar to wolves, apparently. Meat is digested much quicker and completely in human stomachs, whereas we lack the ability to digest plant cell walls. Ruminants have different bacteria and the ability to regurgitate and chew cud which we don't have. 3) I believe red meat is a complete food and there are people who seem to be thriving on that alone. Even reversing chronic illnesses with it. You need lots of animal fat as well though, not just protein. Climate. 1) I don't agree with factory farming, American feedlot style. Definitely. As dereklane says, both crop and meat production should be done better. 2) The thing is though how do you manage growing crops at scale without using chemical fertilisers and pesticides? Even then doing so still disturbs the soil and destroys habitat. Rabbits, etc. still need culling to stop them eating the crops. 3) I disagree. No animal evolved to eat cereals. We give these animals these crops because it's cheaper and it allows them to cram more of them onto the available land. Also the link I replied to mack with suggests ruminants are an efficient way to turn pasture into meat. 4) I think it is. Animals can be "harvested" for want of a better word at any time of year. Vegetables can't. It's going to be slim pickings and starvation over the winter and spring if you only ate seasonal vegetables. Especially since as you say yourself it's difficult to obtain a fully nutritious diet as a vegan. Three months of slowly rotting root veg would be difficult to live off. Ethical. 1) & 2) As above, cereal crops for animals is an economic choice rather than a necessity. 3) Indeed they do, but only since the Tories got in, I believe. It's a contentious issue I think and not a necessity. Still and all though, if you're counting lives it's still most likely fewer. I agree that one diet doesn't necessarily fit all in the same way. Sorry to hear about your mother's passing, but it sounds like she had a long, healthy life. As a bit of a conspiracy nut (well I post on here, right!?), the demonisation of red meat is a strong reason for me to suspect that eating it is probably good way to stop people from needing to buy pharmaceutical products. On that basis I've even considered* taking up smoking! * I haven't
