and the only way to sequester carbon semi permanently is to burn old timber into charcoal and bury it. There is no point doing this as long as we continue to dig up and burn nature's long term CCS - Coal, which ever way we look at it. The same applies to so-called carbon farming, because any ecosystem that reaches a stable condition simply cycles carbon between soil and atmosphere. If it accumulated there would be new peat deposits. The converse is in the tropics where almost all the nutrients and carbon are in the biota as the rate of decomposition in the soil is very rapid, including termites.... I hate to say this, as I have friends in the E movement who are really keen on "regenerative farming" and forestry... including you RG! But I must.
