content of the atmosphere was only a little above where it had been for many millennia. But then it began to rise dramatically, with mean temperatures following suit closely. All this is there en claire in the various sources of palaeontological record such as ice-cores from long-standing ice sheets. In the much longer-term reaches of that record, there are repeated instances when CO2 was released naturally into the atmosphere in increased quantities, and always, like clockwork, global mean temperatures rose in close parallel, every time, and fell again only as the atmospheric CO2 was reduced by the Gaian (multi-pathway) homoeostasis mechanisms. Conversely, the Little Ice Age episode demonstrates what can be done with even limited re-forestation. The timber and paper industries could continue to ply their trades under a system of wise, Gaian forest management; always observing two points, though: one being that there are strict, balanced limits on how much you can extract from the forests, with balanced give-backs of - for example - composted humanure, as part of the management, to maintain a circular rather than a linear economy/ecology; and the other being that hemp is a much better feedstock than wood for many of their applications.
