The design method for floating gears is to increase timing belt life and a reduction in timing belt noise. Because the gears are floating they can move freely, when the belt is tensioned this allows a equal tension to be applied around the complete belt run. Once the tension is complete the gears are then tightened to the shafts. when the gears are keyed onto the shafts it is very difficult to get a equal balanced tension on the cam-belt. The more complex the belt run is on modern DHOC engines the greater the problem. This can lead to over tension problems that will reduce belt life and produce more belt noise.
