All this strawmanning of the left and conflating it with Liberalism is a bit depressing. The left supports the deep state? - that's ridiculous; a contradiciton in terms even (except maybe for vanguardist leninists, but not that deep state) - which left wing people do you have in mind? Among the people i know, living for years under blairism, it's been obvious for a long time how little connection third way liberalism has to actual left wing politics - so obvious it didn't even need to be said - well it seems to need to be said again, more and more.
The overton window is not reality - both liberals and conservatives would each like to create/maintain the illusion that Liberal means left for their own reasons - the liberals to make themselves seem 'nicer'; the conservatives to blame actions of liberal states on the left in general - they both recognise their shared enemy when it comes down to it (as did stalin in spain), and so both would prefer to make anything further left than liberalism beyond the pale - we shouldn't allow them to control the language by going along with it - this is what orwell was talking about.
