Democracy, bourgeois style, is highly overrated in my opinion. From the beginning it was always qualified by the concept of 'citizenship' which tends to temper pure democracy, which has a lot of problematic issues connected with it. One obviously one needs an engaged and informed citizenry for democracy to work properly. I don't think one can describe the British public as especially informed about the workings of the European Union to be in a postion to judge it. An informed electorate would surely never have allowed Boris Johnson and Nigel Farrage to grab so much attention, two ambitious demagogues with their own agendas that have nothing to do with the realities of the European Union.
