It can easily be both. From the point of view of changing the quality of people's lives it was as successful as "slaves choosing which ankle to have the manacle on". And attacking our fellow European workers was a hell of a price to pay for such a superficial achievement. People saw it as an opportunity to deal with what they saw as a major threat to their quality of life - other Europeans coming over here taking their jobs, housing, NHS appointments, operations and so on. And to a large extent, they were right. But it manifested itself as an attack on the "other". People who are different to us. It was no different to when the Irish first came or black people. We have let them all down. Instead of bringing people together we have strengthened borders and the power of those very same bosses who we claim to be against. The ironic thing is you are never going to get rid of the EU through a referendum. It is a huge powerful trading block right on our doorstep that we cannot do without. It was always going to play a huge part in people's lives whatever happened. Our role should have been to show them that the real enemy are the bosses not their fellow workers. Emma Goldman and Bakunin would have been in there like a shot, organising local anarchists to make that case. I also think you are giving way too much importance to your anecdotal evidence (I have my own evidence: The local Polish Centre trashed. Peole abused if heard speaking a foreign language. Any foreign language. I witnessed an elderly black man being abused at a bus stop in Putney. And nobody gave a damn until I stepped in. Nobody cared where he came from. He was the 'other' and we have this heaven sent opportunity to deal with them.) It hss awakened long simmering passions and hatred. These very people who you credit with wanting to get rid of government are the very people who have chosen to give the keys of the kingdom to Boris and his Tories. The only thing they want to get rid of are foreigners. And I haven't even mentioned risking the peace process in Ireland's Six Counties. And, no, we are not going to get rid of our own government next. The very idea, attractive though it is, is quite fanciful. You make it sound as if there's some carefully worked out plan. When in fact we have no idea what will happen next.
