Saving face when it means that nothing changes (indeed, it'll probably be worse), might be a personal success, but there are always other considerations and especially when the leader of a political party seeking election to improve the lives of the less fortunate; if one believes his sincerity there. As someone once said, integrity can be your own worse enemy and certainly it has lost me several jobs, one very well paid. Yes, head on the pillow and all that, but I'm not the leader of the opposition.
P.S. It didn't lose him the election. He lost in 2017 with integrity relatively intact.
