Well, I compared elections and a referendum, not exactly a million miles from each other.
But you didn't answer my question -- would it have been right to come out of the EU without a deal of some sort? As that seems to be what you're suggesting when speaking of the democratic vote.
In that case maybe you could tell me what would happen at border crossings at Ireland/ N. Ireland, what happens to goods coming in at Dover etc. What rights do European citizens keep after Brexit? What about Brits in the EU? Do you just simply annul all existing rules? Is that a responsible way forward?
If we start making up extra rules to suit ourselves after the fact, it doesn't work.
What extra rules? The Tories did try to get deals through, as did parliament through all sorts of votes. None of them got enough votes -- either blocked by Brexiteers or by Remainers or by others who reasoned it would be an awful deal. It's been an awful mess, but hardly a simple story of the elite blocking the people. (Precisely the story BoJo and Farage like to spin.)
This is why I think this stalemate is not very different from a hung parliament with the parties not being able to form a coalition, so the way out is to hold another election/i.e. vote on a deal. And Corbyn will, should he win, try to put together a deal, and give that option. Seems by far the most reasonable way forward.
